After the historic old town, the harbor area is the most prominent part of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund. Dominated by solitary historic warehouse buildings in the north and large industrial buildings in the south, the harbour area on the south side of the harbour collages together in a temporally multi-layered character. The most prominent and heavily frequented by tourists is the recently renovated harbour island at Stralsund‘s northern harbour. Towards the south, the harbour boardwalk loses itself in industrial typologies and empty, slowly decaying warehouses. In order to redevelop the site of the old shipyard, new cultural space is to be developed in the urban area via the typology of the Kunsthalle with changing exhibitions and events.
The basic idea of this project is therefore to initiate the development of the southern boardwalk via a new cultural building and thus make the harbour area more attractive and more versatile. At the same time, the establishment of the Kunsthalle is intended to expand the cultural repertoire of the hanseatic city of Stralsund so that a separate space for contemporary art and its exhibition can be created alongside Stralsund‘s well-known maritime museums.
